Customer Rating: Summary: Good low cost standalone RAID solution Comment: I've been using the Terastation Live NAS 4TB for 70 days. I know because it sends me an e-mail every morning with key stats, uptime and state of the disks. I'm running in a RAID 5 configuration which means I loose about 1TB of space due to the striping but the remaining 3TB has been rock solid ... so far. I have 5 machines sharing the drive for both live data and backups.
You definately pay a premium for the 4TB of space with GB drive prices dropping daily. I was a little suspicious about the Hitachi drives as this manufacturer has historically had problems but support has assured me that I can replace a failed drive with any 1TB eSATA drive.
Setup and configuration was relatively simple and attaching to my machines (WinXP & Vista) was a breeze.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not recommended for Macs Comment: Even though the company claims to support Macs, you have to have a PC anytime you want to do a firmware upgrade. Even though the unit was brand new, the installed firmware was very old and in the process of upgrading I wasted 2 days of my time. First of all, if I didn't also have a PC to perform the firmware upgrade I would have been out of luck. Then after waiting on hold for at least an hour I spent the better part of a day with 3 tech reps to get the unit to upgrade. Then I had to wait for Drive 2 to reconfigure itself in the RAID which took almost 24 hours. Then after all this, the configuration still does not match their documentation for setting up Web Access. So once again to Tech support and waiting on the phone for over an hour just to be told that they would call me back the next day at noon. Well it has been three weeks now and they still haven't called back despite sending them an email of being displeased with their service. And like the other posters mentioned, I can't believe that this company can stay in business with such lousy customer service - Oh well, if Sony can then I guess maybe BuffaloTech can also.
